The lemon cleanse has been around for 50 years as both a short term weight loss program and detox method. Here are some guidelines for success on this easy program.

These days it seems like everyone is constantly battling to remain healthy, whether that means to lose a few pounds or detoxify. Inputting the words "weight loss," "detoxify," or "colon cleanse" into a search box on a web browser will bring back hundreds of results. Many commercially packaged potions for better health also bring healthy price tags. Fortunately there is a completely natural and safe method that costs little.

The Lemon Cleanse Has been a Hollywood Weight Loss Secret for Decades

Peter Glickman, author of the book Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days has stated that "the Master Cleanse, by Stanley Burroughs is, in my opinion, the fastest and most effective way to regain your vitality and to feel the joy of living again, never mind that it will help you lose weight, detoxify, and give you outstanding energy."

A few companies have sprung up to package the ingredients and publish books to describe the cleanse, but the ingredients are simple and easily obtainable:

  1. lemons, preferably organic
  2. grade "B" organic maple syrup (the darker the better)
  3. access to pure or filtered water
  4. cayenne pepper
  5. sea salt

For the lemons, if helps to have a friend with a bountiful lemon tree (who doesn't use pesticides). Otherwise, organic lemons can be found in most supermarkets. Grade "B" organic maple syrup can be a challenge to find but it is on the shelves at most specialty health supermarkets. Filtered water, rather than straight tap or even bottled water, is essential. Finally, sea salt and cayenne pepper can be found in any grocery store.

Starting the Lemon Cleanse

The ingredients and the concept may be simple, but the program is far from easy. It requires a ten day commitment that should be free of pressing engagements or other major events. The first day of the cleanse begins with the sea salt enema. Combine a teaspoon of sea salt with a quart of the filtered water and drink it all. This will pour through the body and bring on urgent bowel movements within a half hour to an hour, so plan accordingly.

The Lemon Cleanse Recipe

Inexpensive juicers can be found in any big box retailer or supermarket and the following ingredients should be combined in a large pitcher:

  1. two quarts of water
  2. 12 tablespoons of maple syrup
  3. 12 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  4. one teaspoon of cayenne pepper

It is best to make the lemonade in a two quart container so that it will be available to drink throughout the day. Along with the lemonade, drinking lots of filtered water is also a good idea. Each day through the 10-day lemon cleanse program begins with the sea salt solution, and the two quart recipe of lemonade gives plenty of natural nutrition.

What Can You Expect on the Lemon Cleanse?

Many good websites give good information on details of the lemon cleanse. As with any diet program, large or small, check with a health professional before beginning. Over the 10 days some people may experience headaches, especially moderate to heavy caffeine users. These will pass. Though the lemonade is tasty and satisfying, it is fine to break up the monotony of it with servings of herbal tea or light bouillon. Watch for upcoming articles that reveal specific results of the cleanse.
